Principals and Benefits

“Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.” –Joseph Pilates

The Pilates method is effective at creating long, lean muscles that are strong, flexible and under control.  Joe defined Contrology as complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit, and his philosophies promoted whole body health.  The mind and body must both be actively engaged to reap the real benefits of the method.  All Pilates exercises are based on specific movement principals: whole body movement, breathing, balanced muscle development, concentration, control, centering, precision, flow and rhythm.

The Pilates student strives to develop a strong connection to their powerhouse (or core).  It is from this deep connection that movement is initiated and a series of controlled, flowing exercises are performed.  Focus is on proper form, alignment, and deep breathing- emphasizing quality over quantity.  With regular practice the results and benefits are numerous: improved coordination, strength, balance, mobility, and stability, efficient/flowing movement, improved posture, mental and spiritual rejuvenation, increased body awareness & self confidence, and an overall sense of well-being!

Due to it’s ability to be modified to address injuries and individual needs,  Pilates can be safely enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels.  The principals and benefits of the Pilates method are designed to be applied to your daily life and other activities- making all you do safer, more effective, and enhancing your  quality of life.
